Rómovia na Slovensku
Kvalifikované štatistické odhady uvádzajú, že v Slovenskej republike žije asi 400 000 Rómov, čo je asi 7,45 % z celkového počtu obyvateľov.
Napriek tomu, že Rómovia na Slovensku sú etnicky, sociálne aj kultúrne rozmanití, majoritná populácia ich spravidla vníma ako jednotnú skupinu. Skutočná či domnelá odlišná kultúra rómskej menšiny a jej celkový spôsob života vytvárajú medzi majoritnou populáciou a Rómami napätie. Odlišnosť Rómov je ostatnými obyvateľmi vnímaná negatívne. U majoritnej populácie prevláda názor, že značná časť Rómov sa nechce alebo nevie adaptovať na spoločenské normy a Rómovia majú pocit ohrozenia a vylúčenia.
Vysoká miera nezamestnanosti veľkej časti rómskej populácie, nízka úroveň vzdelania a vysoká odkázanosť na sociálny systém vytvárajú reálne bariéry pri začleňovaní. Problémom čelí predovšetkým tá časť rómskej populácie, kde sa kumulujú viaceré znevýhodnenia. V ohrození chudobou sú predovšetkým deti a mladí ľudia z marginalizovaného prostredia, ktorých šance na začlenenie sú nízke. Segregované vzdelávanie znamená tiež zníženie šancí na získanie aspoň stredoškolského vzdelania, a bez vzdelania šanca uplatniť sa na trhu práce je veľmi nízka. Bývanie v nevyhovujúcich podmienkach vplýva aj na zdravotný stav: odhaduje sa, že priemerný vek dožitia Rómov je o desať rokov nižší ako u majoritnej populácie.
